Executive Functioning
Executive Functioning refers to mental processes that allow us to accomplish or execute tasks. These include:
initiation
prioritize, organize, and sequence
make decisions cautiously
set reasonable goals
make short-term and long-term plans to meet goals
predict outcomes
manage time effectively
inhibit distractions
solve problems
keep track of information and pay close attention
be flexible
shift attention from one task to another
future planning
These functions are mainly controlled by the prefrontal cortex, though other areas of the brain are involved as well. Difficulties in these areas will impact many aspects of life, including school performance, work performance, and interpersonal relationships. The good news is, executive functioning skills can be taught and strengthened. We provide tailored, direct instruction to help children, adolescents, and adults of all ages improve their performance and productivity in school, work, and at home.
